Man Behind the Lens: SeÁn McSweeney
Professional Photographer Based in Johannesburg, South Africa
Everything begins with the face. Faces intrigue me.
Faces intrigue and inspire me. Show me an engaging or intriguing face and I will go to great lengths to photograph that individual.More often than not, I work out of my very well equipped and professional studio in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Most of my people photography is currently studio-based. and includes any type of portraiture, including individuals, couples and families. Much of my studio work is focused on developing model portfolios, fashion and glamour photography.
I am fortunately not entirely studio-bound. I am from time-to-time commissioned to shoot events and corporate work, which always provides a welcome change of scenery! This often includes still photography as well as video production.
People and Model Studio Photography in Johannesburg
I particularly enjoy working with models. This is a fascinating time to live in South Africa. As Africa gradually rises to meet the challenge of assuming its rightful place in the world, many emerging models gravitate to Johannesburg from all over Africa. Every now-and-then, I get the opportunity to photograph a potentially great or unique model. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing an aspirant photographic model succeeding! I particularly enjoy shooting to build model portfolios, capturing a range of images that express who the model really is.
International Studio Photography
I regularly travel within Africa when commissions to photograph models present themselves. Nothing pleases me more!
I am occasionally privileged to photograph models in the USA and UK. This is always invigorating - these opportunities provide a different perspective and very enjoyable change in dynamics.
I have photographed professional and emerging models on location in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, the UK and the USA. I have been fortunate enough to photograph visiting models from Australia, Botswana, Malawi, the DRC and Nigeria in my local studio in Johannesburg.
Wildlife PhotographyOn rare occasions when my studio and commercial work permits, I manage to escape the city and venture into the African bush to photograph animals and birds in their natural surroundings. This is my quiet time. Most of my wildlife photography work is “close-up” or “tight” and shot with prime long lenses. This probably often translates into my close or tight poses of people.
I have photographed wildlife in South Africa, Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana, Mauritius, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The photographs included on this website are a selection of personal work created together with friends and strangers.
The strangers often become friends. The animals and birds simply go on their natural way – and I, on mine.
Giving Back to My Community
I draw great personal pleasure from assisting NGOs/charities and disadvantaged schools and am happy to do this free of charge when my schedule permits.
"Giving-back" to the community is a central principle of my photographic work.
From time-to-time and dependent on my availability, I shoot free of all charges (or at a reduced rate to cover my direct costs) for charities and schools in disadvantaged communities and to non-profit organisation that I believe deserves support.
